Heating of roofs

Despite the seeming lightness, new-fallen snow weighs a lot. The mass of cubic meter of such snow can be about half tones. Advantages of cable heating

Protection of a roof by means of electric heating elements is used both on civil, and on industrial facilities. Today it is the most effective and available way of fight against snow and ice on roofs, valleys and drains. It is implemented by means of the heating cable, which differs from usual conducting production in ability to transform electric current to thermal energy.

Cores of the heating cable have high resistance. Current, passing on them, heats the conductor, and it transfers thermal energy to material of a roof and the frozen rainfall, forcing them to thaw. Electrical heating of roofs

  • Constructional features of a roof. Sizes, tilt angle, configuration, type of a system and mass of other subtleties are considered at a project development stage.

  • Cable laying. Before installation all cores are tested for continuity and their specific resistance is measured. It is done to make sure there is no breakdown. The cable is  laid on a spiral or in the form of a crest at bottom edge of a roof with fastening between each stage, fixing it by special slips or profile arms. Special attention is paid to density of adhesion of the heating element to the system. In avoidance of overheating saggings of a cable are not allowed.
  • Connection of all components. Each element is connected to the control unit, configuration of the heating and alarm wires is carried out, connection of sensors and protective devices is carried out. Process is performed according to the protective scheme and standards of Rules of installation of electric equipment. After completion of assembly the grounding contour is connected.
  • Testing. Consists in carrying out commissioning (on condition of admissible temperature outside). The system is on and control measurements of key indicators are made.

To avoid mechanical damages of a roof, strengthening of separate elements, locking, pressuring up and some other operations are performed before lifting on the roof.

Electric power expense

The profitability of system for vast majority of Russians is the defining factor, by which they are guided at the choice of protective electric equipment. It is natural, because payment for electric power is the biggest part of expenses of each budget. It is possible to learn approximate values of cost of anti-frosting system this way:

  • C year - total cost of work of system in a year.
  • Rn - rated power of the installed components, kW.
  • S - cost of 1 kW/hour of the electric power for the specific consumer.
  • h - time (in hours) operation of heaters for all year.

The last parameter is calculated approximately, it is impossible to find out weather conditions with an accuracy of several degrees for all season in advance. For calculation assume that the equipment will be switched on in the middle of November and is disconnected in the middle of April. At continuous functioning of system (that is almost impossible in view of obligatory existence of days with above-zero temperature) it will turn out that it will work a little more than three and a half thousand hours. It is that maximum by which it is possible to be guided. The actual figures are much more modest. It is found out by an empirical way that the rated power of a cable has to be not less than of 20 W / meter.

On the example given below it is shown, how expenses on the electric power spent for work of resistive system of protection for a season are calculated:

C year = 5 kW*2700 h*1,05 rub / kW*h = 14 175 rubles

Use of self-regulating cables will reduce these figures by ten-seventeen percent. But even without it the account, which should be paid annually, is 10 times less the expenses spent for replacement of the cheapest roofing system and capital repairs of constructional elements.
